Niagara Split Follow-up

The original donor hive was looking increasingly strong and bursting with new bees everyday. I really wanted to make sure that the queen was moved over to the new split. So I checked the top box, which was all empty brood frames. I found eggs, so I knew the queen was still in the original donor hive. I searched the frames and found the queen. I caged the queen and then reassembled the original donor hive.

I moved the queen over to the split that I performed 4 days prior. I placed the caged queen in the bottom of a brood frame in Box (008). The cage was plugged with marshmallow candy and some wax to cover the candy. I will open the hive tomorrow and most likely release her by hand., if all signs point to an accepted queen. I want to release her soon, as all next week the temps are in the 30s with possible ran snow mix.

Early Spring?

Winter is slowly in the decline with occasional rain instead of snow on the forecast. As this is Colorado, I am sure we will still be seeing some low temperatures and snow. But in the meantime, the bees are out and collecting Pollen.

Hive Inspection – Open House

We had a great turn out for the Beekeeping open house. Approximately 30 adventurous adults and kids showed up to learn more about the world of bees. We only had 2 bee suits but everyone shared and had a chance to experience the bees up close. We performed a couple of hive inspections and installed a new colony of bees into a hive. Thanks to everyone who came out.
